Scarce and early 93rd Sutherland Highlanders Highland Bonnet badge 1837 - 1856

A heavy (29 grams) die struck brass feather bonnet badge with two original brass lugs (east - west) as worn 1837 - 1856. Note that later patterns had the addition of the scroll Balaclava. This badge is in great condition and was the pattern worn by the Regiment at the time of this famous action. Circa 6.7cm tall and 6cm wide.

K&K 566 refers, but this version is voided between top of scroll and thistle wreath. Great condition and scarce.

The 93rd was the regiment who were immortalised by Robert Gibb in the painting "The Thin Red Line". The Thin Red Line was a military action by the Sutherland Highlanders red-coated 93rd (Highland) Regiment at the Battle of Balaclava on 25 October 1854, during the Crimean War. In this incident the 93rd aided by a small force of Royal Marines and some Turkish infantrymen, led by Sir Colin Campbell, routed a Russian cavalry charge. Previously Campbell’s Highland Brigade had taken part in actions at the Battle of Alma and the Siege of Sevastopol. There were more Victoria Crosses presented to the Highland soldiers at that time than at any other.
