Original Photograph of Raffles Hotel Singapore, 1945

Original black and white photograph (this is not a postcard and has been removed from album containing a collection of WW2 RN photographs). This famous Singapore landmark seems to have faired well after it had been in the hands of the Japanese as it was their HQ (despite the grenade party described below). There is a British Army truck to bottom right of the photo. Vintage cars parked to the front.

The Japanese Commander, General Itagaki had met his generals and senior staff at his HQ at the former Raffles College in Bukit Timah and told his men that they would have to obey the surrender instructions and keep the peace. That night, more than 300 officers committed suicide using grenades in the Raffles Hotel after a farewell sake party.

Circa 5 inches by 4 inches. Good condition, one thumb crease, otherwise in very good condition and a reasonably sharp image.
