No 27 Squadron Royal Air Force (RAF) Badge circa 1940s by Miller

A good original circa 1940's 27 Squadron gilt and enamel badge, with motto " Quam Celerrime Ad Astra", the reverse with maker's details "H.W.Miller Ltd Branston St B'Ham.18". Very good condition, original pin fittings, no damage to the enamel. 33mm tall.

The elephant as a badge was approved by HM King Edward VIII in October 1936. The badge was based on an unofficial emblem first used in 1934 and commemorates the Squadron's first operational aircraft - the Martinsyde G100 'Elephant' - and the unit's long sojourn to India. Somewhat appropriately the squadron currently operates Chinook heavy lift helicopters!

The motto when translated means 'With all speed to the Stars'.
