WW1 Silver War Badge (SWB) to Pte George Kew, RASC (Royal Army Service Corps) - Remounts

SWB officially impressed B260681 to Private George Kew, Royal Army Service Corps. An unmarked silver circlet inscribed 'For King And Empire Services Rendered' bearing crowned 'GRI' Imperial Cypher to voided centre. In good condition, dark toned, with original C clasp and pin. Circa 32mm in diameter. Copy of CD version of SWB roll entry and copy of WW1 Medal Index Card (MIC) to be supplied.

R4/111031 Pte George Kew, of the RASC (ASC until late 1918 when the 'Royal' prefix was added) enlisted 12th June 1915 and was discharged on the 31st January 1919, on account of sickness. He does not appear to have served overseas so this is most probably his only medal entitlement. An R prefix to his army number indicates this man served in the Remounts section of the ASC. The prefixes RS, R/TS, R4 and RX4 are also often seen. The “S” means that the man was specially enlisted for his trade: in other words, he came from civilian employment in a trade that was of direct value to work in the Remounts. The “R/TS” implies that the man was specially enlisted for work in the Remounts and/or Horse Transport. R4 and RX4 are less clear but may relate to the compulsory transfer in 1916 of men who were serving in ASC units of the Territorial Force on to regular army terms

Approximately 1,150,000 badges were issued to all services, which had to be claimed and then approved.
