Worcester Regiment Valise Badge without "Firm" 4th pattern

A brass, valise badge for The Worcestershire Regiment, with a 'box' fastening. This is an earlier issue as there is evidence of the original four wires for fixing now removed and replaced with a contemporary brass box fixing (this with some twisted wires for mounting which can easily be removed). In good overall condition.

Bennett dates this pattern to 1890-1952. This is the fourth of five different patterns worn by the Regiment, and among line regiments the distinction of wearing this badge on the knapsack was an idiosyncrasy of the 29th Regiment, from about 1838 onwards. They were amalgamated with the 36th Regiment to form the Worcestershire Regiment in 1881 and the practice of wearing a valise badge on the knapsack continued. The distinction of wearing a Valise badge which was otherwise resticted to the Brigade of Guards earned them the nickname 'Guards of the Line'. An interesting collection can be made relatively cheaply of these large and impressive badges. Circa 10.5cms tall.

Bennett "Badges of the Worcestershire Regiment" No 1108 refers.
