WW2 East African Reconnaissance Squadron EARS Cast Brass Cap Badge - Maker marked

A scarce and well made, attractive theatre made large and heavy cast cap badge to this colonial war raised unit which was formed in 1939 and took part in the first raid on El Wak on 18th June 1940 (Rosignoli, pages 32 and Plate 17 refer). Maker marked Mohd & Co, Nairobi ( Kenya), who were responsible for the production of a whole series of sand cast badges during WW2 for local African units and most of the East African badges were cast and made in Nairobi.

The (E.A.R.S.) East African Reconnaissance Squadron was part of the East African Armoured Corps that was re-named Kenya Armoured Car Regiment, and then re-named again as the East African Reconnaissance Regiment.

In very good condition, with original slider (hole to bottom for sewing to pagri cloth for wear with the sun helmet). Circa 5.2cm wide and 4.3cm tall. Motto is Semper Vigilans (always vigilant). Worn 1940 - 1942 only.
