WW1 Autograph Book - Property of a young girl 1916 onwards
The first entry reveals the blank autogaph book to have been a gift from her brother George, to his sister Elsie. Many of the entries appear to have been penned or drawn by people she met, mainly from the army, stationed at Whitburn in 1917. A regular contributor of some artistic merit was a CQMS N L Bennett of the 3rd York & Lancaster Regiment but other soldiers from the 3rd Durham Light Infantry, 3rd Northumberland Fusiliers and the 3rd York & Lancaster Regiments have also contributed some fine sketches, signatures and anecdotes. At some point the book appears to have been passed to her cousin Mary in the early 1920s and many of the post war entries appear juvenile and out of character with those entered in the War by adults. A fascinating little booklet with some interesting areas for follow up. I was unable to identify the young ladies surname, but she sums up her character in the final page dated January 1918 - as told by the Reverend F. W. Hall - concluding that she will make someone an excellent wife - shows tact. Intriguing.
