Cold War - 1st Battalion The Border Regiment Woven Cloth Shoulder Title

Genuine and original, as worn, airborne BORDER Regiment shoulder title. A purple felt bearing green felt overlay embroidered in yellow BORDER. This is a scarce title but not a Wartime issue!

In 1953 the 1st Battalion's unofficial coloured designation was officially introduced for the The Border Regiment but the Ministry of Supply got the colour of the thread used to join the two arcs wrong, (yellow); the same applied to the ACF designation.

This pattern, with yellow thread joining the two arcs, was worn post war by the 1st Battalion from circa 1953 until 1955 only. Please note wartime examples used a green thread and post 1955 examples were corrected to green also, although of a slightly different shade to the wartime issues. Nor was the lettering visible on the reverse of wartime issues.

Locke's 'British Airborne Insignia' (p151) states:

"From 1942 until 1951, members of the 1st Battalion The Border Regiment wore a distinctive regimental title. Correct wartime versions of this title were stitched to the purple backing with green thread."

'When Dragons Flew' also states wartime issues were stitched with green thread to the purple backing (Appendix 8, p261).
