A rare cast collar badge of two part construction with two orginal dark toned loops to the reverse. The rose in red and green enamel on a gilt rose surrounded by an open at top laurel wreath in silver plate. This is the more compact pattern and design as worn by officers of the Hampshire Militia's 3rd Battalion from 1881, and Churchill notes this was only for a short time. A good scarce die stamped blackened metal example. Maltese cross surmounted by a Victorian crown; Lions between the arms of the cross which are inscribed "Dorset" "Rifle" "Volrs". To the voided centre , within a circlet inscribed " Pro Patria", a strung bugle. Three original loops to the reverse. In very good condition.
