The R101 airship crashed in France during its maiden overseas voyage on 5 October 1930, killing 48 of the 54 people on board. Curiously, the memoriam card states only 47 killed, including crew and passengers. The killed included Lord Thomson, Air Minister and Sir Sefton Brancker, Air Vice Marshal of the RAF. Postally used, cancelled in Valletta, Malta, but unfortunately stamp removed. Message on reverse is dated April 1912 from a sailor, Fred Smith to his sister. He was seving in HMS Triumph which is one of the shipes featured on the front of the card. Unusual card and Fred undoubtedly saw First War service.
